Concept of our project - Bottlebricks

Concept

- Team: Alicia, Leonie, Luana

- Research question: How much plastic waste do we produce (until bottle is filled)?

We have to look up where and how we can donate these bottles to factories/if they need it.

Is it even possible to give them away in Switzerland?

- Our answer (Project description, methods/techniques):

We start putting our plastic waste in a plastic botte to see how long it takes to fill it up and how much waste we produce, take a picture every day of bottle and plastic piece that goes in the bottle.

We estimate the duration of the filling process up to 2 weeks.

Rules: cut up big plastic pieces so that it fits, use evian 75cl bottle

-->if the small botte fills up too fast we try to redo the project with a bigger bottle

- Material & difficulties:

1 Evian 75cl bottle, plastic waste we produce ourselves

Difficulties may be the bigger plastic pieces that don't fit or hard plastic that can hardly be cut smaller.

-goal/result: Find out how long/how much plastic it takes to fill up such a bottle, measure how much waste there is in a period of time.

(II) Your Research Question (What?)

Wider question (with link to your post):

What are green roofs and how do they operate?

Refined question:

  1. How does a green roof function?
  2. How much does a green roof cost per m²? (Cost estimate)
  3. What are the different types of green roofs and what benefits do they have to offer?
  4. How is a green roof built? How do we build one in miniature form?
  5. How will the young students (from the school) take to our project? More...

wastewater treatment plant - How to get energy from wastewater / vision & imagination

Well, that's my title. Nothing special, but that should clarify a process that many (or at least I) do not know. Here in Switzerland, wastewater treatment is a commonplace that is used by the vast majority of people. In the context of the subject "Technology and Environment", I would like to get to the bottom of this. For this I have thought about some guiding principles:

… Hold on, before I think about these, I would like to have the exact definition of vision and imagination first.

The vision is the idea of an ideal future state that is aspired to. Here: how should wastewater be treated in the future?

Vision, Mission, Strategie einfach erklärt

An imagination is a content represented in the mind, which goes back to a perception, usually also with a mental processing of perceived content. An imagination can result in something that is not present in reality or could even never be present. Likewise, however, imaginations can also represent realistic future-related expectations, or they can be based on memories.

Definition Vorstellung

Now that that's cleared up, I can get back to my questions….

Why did I choose this project?
This is where my biggest problem actually starts. I know that I want to find out what happens between the drainage of the water in the apartment to the complete reuse. Because I have no idea about everything in between. So accordingly, I chose this project and to understand this process.

What do I want to achieve? And how?
In a primary step, I first want to understand everything. Probably there is also not "The wastewater treatment" but many different forms, which are adapted to the wastewater of a particular area. In a second step I would like to share my knowledge. I always find it amazing how many everyday things we are not aware of. And besides, additional knowledge is never bad.

For the first goal, I have several options. The easiest would probably be to ask the Internet. But since that would be a bit too short and boring for me, I'm looking for other options. With a little luck, I have the opportunity to speak directly with someone in the field who can answer all my questions.

For the second goal, I depend on my fellow human beings. Do they find it exciting as well? Are they interested? Do they visit Don't waste my energy? Many questions could follow here.

What should the result be so that I am satisfied?
I would like to realize a project that helps me and others. I would like to say, "Yes, I have understood that pretty well now." Especially the environmental aspect should not be neglected. I think that this plays a big role in wastewater treatment.

How does this project benefit me in the future?
With this project, I understand why wastewater treatment exists and how it works. Of course, it is not knowledge that is needed in most everyday life, but it is certainly not bad to know about it. Maybe I will also learn other facts, such as how our environment could be protected and supported even more.

Next Steps - Green Gaming

Summary:
Our next step is to do an experiment with our computer during the holidays. We try to minimise our energy consumption with very low graphics settings and generally little power. We will track our consumption and compare it with our normal consumption at the end.

Step by step:
- Play video games with high graphics settings and the best settings
- Track our FPS, energy that we use etc.
- Write it down
- Play video games with low graphics settings and only with recommended settings
- Track our FPS, energy that we use etc.
- Write it down which Games we played, what we did exactly regarding the settings
- Write down if there are other ways as well to save energy
- Compare it with the other results
- Write down our comment if it works and what we can do better or different

Penan from Borneo / 7 befter steps

I thought about my project, I envisioned how my project could look like when it is done. I am trying to figure out what I want with my project. These are the questions I asked myself.

How should the project look like when it is done?

What do I want to reach with my project?

What could I improve on this world with my project?

  • How should the project look like when it is done?

It should be something of value, I want to create something I can be proud of. My goal is to have a project which adds value to the people who will read this. I would like to give something back to this world. I want to be able to introduce the people to the way of living from the Penan.

  • What do I want to reach with my project?

I want to teach people, that there is an alternative way of living. A possibility to widen their horizon and rethink if their own way of life and asses if it is the right way to live.

  • What could I improve on this world with my project?

In the long run, I would like to improve the overall situation regarding the views on the environment. I would like, that people realize that we just one planet, and we need to be careful on how we treat it. Nothing is unlimited on earth and as long as we don't change anything we won't survive in the long run. I want to reach that goal with portraying the Penan and show that there is an alternative way.

Vision and Imagination

What is our vision and imagination for our project regarding the protection of coral reefs?

We want to spread awareness and give tips on how we can protect the coral reefs.

The world's coral reefs are suffering from the devastating impacts of pollution, climate change, tourism, overfishing and other threats. Approximately 500 million people worldwide depend on reefs for food. Coral reefs cover just 0.2% of the world's seafloor but are home to a quarter of all marine life. Two thirds of the Great Barrier Reef is already bleached.

We will talk about various ways to protect the coral reefs in our project and hopefully be able to publish that article. We will also write about the way we endanger corals and how it affects us. Our goal is to make sure more people are aware of it and will also spread the word to others. In order to make a difference we have to start somewhere and hope that it will reach a big amount of people.
