Text for the teachers from abroad - Bottle Bricks

Hi there!
We are students from the wkvw school in Wetzikon, Switzerland.

We are currently working on a project about bottle bricks and have made a survey for it. We would be very grateful if you could spread the survey among your students, so we could get different answers from different countries.

Thanks in advance.

Media - Bottle Bricks

Media we are going to use:

- We are going to take photos of our plastic collection (bottles) while we are collecting it. We have planned to take a photo everyday to capture our progress and then put it together into a short film (iMovie on Luana‘s MacBook) to visualise it.

- We‘ll make a survey on Kobo Toolbox and have people answering our questions. We‘ll promote the survey on the instagram account of don‘t waste my energy and our personal instagram accounts. But before we do that, we‘re going to do a test run with our class. After people have answered the survey we want to analyse the data and write a text about it as well as visualising the data in different diagrams (Excel).

Draft of our survey - Bottle Bricks

Description:

Bottle Bricks are a simple and accessible technology that can transform everyday plastic materials into a useful building material plastic bottles stuffed full of trash until they are as compact as bricks.

Think about it: Bottle bricking is a recycling solution of sorts, which makes it good for the environment in some ways. But bottle bricking is not just a way to keep trash out of landfills and waterways. For some, bottle bricking enables them to have a better life: a life with shelter. Bottle bricks are used to build houses for people living in 3rd world countries.

1. How old are you? (Important to see which age category uses the most plasic)

- Under 18

- 18-24

- 25-34

- 35-44

- 45 or above

2. How much one way plastic do you use per day? (Important to see how much plastic is used)

- none

- 1-3 pieces

- 3-6 pieces

- More

3. Have you ever tried to reduce your plastic consumption? (Important to see if people have already had experience with reducing plastic waste and if they are interested in helping the environment)

- yes

- no

4. If you answered Question 3 with „yes“, how was it for you? (Important to know if they would do it again and if it was difficult for them)

- easy

- neither easy nor difficult

- difficult

- I didn‘t try to reduce my plastic comsumption

5. What of the following things would you use to help the environment? (Important to know if people are open to alternatives)

- tote bags

- reusable bottles

- cardboard/paper straws or packaging

- use tupperware

- all of the above

6. Would you be open to switch from plastic to reusable bottles (f.e. glass)? (Important to know if people are open to alternatives)

- yes

- no

- maybe

7. Have you heard of bottle bricks before? (Important to know if people deal with topics about recycling)

- yes

- no

8. Would you be interested in following our project about bottle bricks? (Important to see if people would be interested in reading our end result)

- yes

- no

9. Would you like to also make bottle bricks? (Curiosity)

- likely

- unlikely

Peer assessment - Sports

Feedback:

Can I get an impression of the project in a short time?

Yes, it is possible to get a good overview of the project in a short amount of time. Your goals are very clear by looking at your posts. It‘s a very interesting project.

Are all steps clearly communicated?

We find it a bit difficult to comprehend all your steps. We see your vision and your interview but we can‘t tell how you got from the vision to the interview.

What already looks promising, interesting:

We think the interview that you have already looks quite promising. We think it could be very interesting if you could interview more professional athletes and compare their answers.

What could be added:

As mentioned before we think you should add your steps between your vision and your interview. You could as well translate your interview to English.

Where does the project stand on a scale from 1-10?

6 - In our opinion your project started out well. However, you haven‘t gotten very far with your project and some of your posts are missing. We think if you stay committed it could turn out in a great way. We wish you luck in completing your project.

Vision & Imagination

My thoughts on the project:

I'm curious about how much plastic I use and about how long it takes to fill up a bottle. How can I produce less plastic waste? Are there alternatives to plastic. What can we do with bigger plastic pieces / hard plastic?

Ideas:

•Choose other packaging

•Bring food from home

•Eat out

•Use reusable bottle

•Tote bag

•Use scissors to make smaller pieces that fit in the bottle

Bottle Bricks - Social Media Post

Do you want to produce less plastic waste? We‘ve got you covered. Welcome to our exciting project about Ecobricks. We‘re collecting our everyday plastic waste and put it all into a plastic bottle. Like this we can measure our waste and try to reduce it. Ecobricks can be used to build houses for people in 3rd world countries.🄤

Concept of our project - Bottlebricks

Concept

- Team: Alicia, Leonie, Luana

- Research question: How much plastic waste do we produce (until bottle is filled)?

We have to look up where and how we can donate these bottles to factories/if they need it.

Is it even possible to give them away in Switzerland?

- Our answer (Project description, methods/techniques):

We start putting our plastic waste in a plastic botte to see how long it takes to fill it up and how much waste we produce, take a picture every day of bottle and plastic piece that goes in the bottle.

We estimate the duration of the filling process up to 2 weeks.

Rules: cut up big plastic pieces so that it fits, use evian 75cl bottle

-->if the small botte fills up too fast we try to redo the project with a bigger bottle

- Material & difficulties:

1 Evian 75cl bottle, plastic waste we produce ourselves

Difficulties may be the bigger plastic pieces that don't fit or hard plastic that can hardly be cut smaller.

-goal/result: Find out how long/how much plastic it takes to fill up such a bottle, measure how much waste there is in a period of time.

Time plan:
