Status Update - Green Roofs

We have found multiple potential collaboration-partners:

  1. Student from the ETH: Will hopefully construct a heating lamp and a water dispenser for the advanced green roof.
  2. Kindergarten teacher: Here we will build the "simple" green roof together with the children.
  3. Student from Israel: Has the know how and experience to help envision and construct an advanced green roof. Additionally, we will conduct an interview with him, and he will give us constructive feedback to our project.

Sadly, the student from the ETH, did not meet our demands and was not able to support and guide us which our idea of building our own watering-system for our miniature green roof. Therefore, we had to lose one of our three collaboration partners.

We have set up an appointment with the kindergarten teacher. We will go to the class in the afternoon to conduct our miniature green roof building with the older kindergarten students in the afternoon. There will be approximately 12 students.

We were able to conduct our interview with the student from Israel. We asked our questions and recorded the interview. Additionally, he gave us feedback to our project and highlighted how important green roofs are.

Furthermore, we have decorated our miniature green roof last weekend and have plated the seeds for our roof. Surprisingly, they have already started to grow. We also went to a shoe store to ask for some empty shoe-boxes and were able to take 5 pieces. These will be used in the kindergarten.

In conclusion, we have two collaboration partners for our project.

Status update for our project - Green Gaming

Status:

Last Sunday we had a meeting with three students from India, Fadil, Manas and Advaith. They told us about the gaming culture in India and how they consume gaming. They also told us about their view on the connection between gaming and the environment. The meeting went very well and the students were very interested in our project and promised us further cooperation.

Next Steps:

  • Evaluate relevant information from the meeting
  • Create a list of energy consumption of different games and discuss it with Indian students
  • Have another meeting with the Indian students and discuss the further steps

Possible Collaboration partner for project „Wastewater“

Since I have not been able to find any collaboration partners so far, I would like to give some thought to who else I could ask for this.

1. In primary school I had a teacher who lived for a few years in south africa and thailand.  I could ask him, if he knows anyone who could I ask. Maybe he has also some informations for me.

2. I could ask WWF if they can give me some further information about wastewater treatment in other countries. Especially in eastern or african countries (https://www.wwf.ch/de/ueber-uns/kontaktformular)

3. Another option is Helvtas. They provide humanitarian help in the most poor countries (https://www.helvetas.org/de/schweiz/wer-wir-sind/kontakt)

4. Eawag is a water research institute with international roots. Perhaps they can tell me about the conditions in other countries (https://www.eawag.ch/de/ueber-uns/portraet/auftrag-und-strategie/)

Ideas from the teacher:

1. Alexandra Kappeler  1st degree connection1st
Programme Manager & Deputy Head of Expert Group «Construction»
alexandra.kappeler@gmail.com

2. WASH ExpertWASH Expert
Swiss Humanitarian Aid SHA, Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA

3. https://www.eawag.ch/en/department/sandec/

Special Idea:

The company „Vuna“ provides a different method for wastewater. Maybe I can integrate it in my project (https://vuna.ch)

Possible Questions

Preparing possible questions for our call:

  1. How important is sustainability to you when it comes to fashion ?
  2. What are your priorities when choosing clothing ?
  3. Do you know any brands that specialize in sustainable fashion ?
  4. What are your thoughts on the environmental impact of fast fashion ?
  5. How do you think we can reduce the impact of fast fashion on the environment ?
  6. How would you describe the importance of fashion in your life ?
  7. What can we do as consumers to make the fashion industry more sustainable? What changes would you like to see ?

Try to find a collaboration partner

Sehr geehrter Herr Schneebeli

Answer:

Herr Schneebeli

Step 2 - Team Building

What has been done:

- Purchased green roof material for our miniature green roof (Do-It Migros)
- Contacted Kindergarten
- Contacted ETH student - sadly, he couldn't meet our requirements for our project.
- Set up an interview with an Israeli environment student. He will additionally give us a feedback and constructive critique on our project.

What will be done:

- This Saturday (18.03.2023) we will build the miniature green roof.
- The interview will be conducted via Zoom due to the long distance this Friday (17.03.2023 14.00 CET)
- Set a date for our visit to the Kindergarten to build the miniature green roof with the children
- Summarize the interview, our visit to the Kindergarten and document the growth of our miniature green roof.
- Prepare for the IDAF with German class.

What is our Vision and Imagination for our project regarding green roof?

Imagination: We would like to find a collaboration partner for this project, with whom we can build miniature green roofs with to demonstrate how a green roof really works and how it is constructed from the inside. These small green roofs will be built in a kindergarten class made out of a shoebox.

Additionally, we have contacted a green roof specialist. He is an Israeli student and will give us feedback to our project and we will conduct an interview with him.

This would allow us to show how the environment influences the growth and maintenance that is necessary for a green roof. This will also give us the opportunity to teach young children about green roofs and how important they are.

Vision: Our Vision with green roofs is that more cities install them to use the space that we do not need/use either way and help our environment with that.
