The Horse 2023

Environment & Technology

Plan for today (16.05.2023)

- Start planning what I want to publicate on "dont waste my energy"

-Start creating the post on "dont waste my energy"

- Tasks

My plan for today is to get my text reday for publication and maybe start the proccess with wordpress. I already have my login information. Im waiting to get a short intro and explanation how everything works.

Plan for today (16.05.2023)

- Write a post about the actual IDAF Status

- Start writing my text for DWME

At the moment, my project is on a good way. My Interview with Ms Kappeler is still pending because I cannot reach her since a few weeks. At all I already have a lot of „know-how“ in wastewater treatment. I also have shown that in my IDAF work. The problem is, that this text is not very personal yet. For my text on DWME I want to change that..

Framework for our webcontribution (wind power)

[Title] wind power in the local area

Picture of wind turbines on the swiss mountains

[Short Intro: Research question] (short audio) - How we found our topic and about what we want to do our research.

[Relation to the Project - what did you know before and what new treasure of experience did you gain?] We already knew, that is a good renewable resource. Now we learned a lot more about wind power.

[Main body]

[Methodology] We researched on the topic and we had an interview with a scientific assistant from an institute for energy power and a local person.

[Media Creation] We have a short audio and we produced an explanotory video.

[Experience, Reflection] We are surprised what an impact wind power has in Switzerland.

Framework for our webcontribution (ski resort)

[Title] The impact of artificial snow and its future

Picture of a ski slope with grass on both sides of it

[Short Intro: Research question] (short audio) How will the use of artificial snow change in the future?

[Relation to the Project - what did you know before and what new treasure of experience did you gain?] We already knew, that the use of artificial snow is rising from year to year, but we did not know how much money one kilometer of an artificial snow ski slope costs.

[Main body]

[Methodology] We researched on the topic and we had an interview with a researcher from the SLF Davos.

[Media Creation] We have a short audio and we are in the final steps of our teaser video.

[Experience, Reflection] We are surprised how natural artificial snow is despite it being artificial.

Our survey results - in progress

Hey there!

Thank you for answering our survey questions. Without you we couldn't have reached this level in our research.

58 people around the world participated.

1. How much one way plastic do you use per day? (e.g. PET bottles, wrapping paper)

Most people use 2 pieces of plastic per day. On average, people use 3.77 pieces of plastic a day.

2. Have you ever tried to reduce your plastic consumption?

38 people tried to reduce their plastic consumption at least once while 17 people never tried.

3. If you answered Question 2 with „yes“, how was it for you?

Most people (15) think that reducing plastic is neither easy nor difficult. Almost as many people (14) found it difficult. The other participants didn't try (12) or it was easy  (9) for them.

4. Which of the following would you do to help the environment?

The result shows that not many people who answered our survey like the use of cardboard / paper straws or packaging. The usage of own bags, reusable bottles and tupperware is more likely to be chosen.

5. Would you be open to switching from plastic to reusable bottles (e.g. glass)?

43 people would be open to switch from plastic bottles to reusable bottles whereas 12 people are unsure.

6. Have you ever heard of bottle bricks before?

This answer shows us that bottle bricks aren't very known. Maybe our project will / could change that.

7. Would you like to make bottle bricks as well?

This answer may have resulted in that way because the topic isn't very popular and in some places it may be difficult to donate them when produced.

8. Would you be interested in following our bottle brick project?

We are happy to see how many people are interested in our project!

9. How old are you?

We received the most answers from people aged under 18.

10. Which country are you from?

Most people who answered our survey questions are from Switzerland. Some are from India. Other countries are specified in Question 11.

11. If you answered Question 10 with "other", please write down your country in CAPITAL LETTERS.

- PAPA-NEUGUINEA: 1 person

- ITALY: 1 person

Quite interesting that our survey reached other countries apart from Switzerland!

Framework for the web contribution - Animal welfare

[Animal protection is education to humanity]

[Self-made header picture = "big intro picture", Photo, Drawing, Cartoon]

[Short Intro: Research question, highlights of the article]

Animal welfare is an important topic today. In this article we focus on livestock farming (Nutztierhaltung). A farm animal is an animal that is used economically by humans because of certain abilities or for aesthetic reasons. The vision of the World Animal Protection Society is a world in which animals are perceived by people and treated with respect and in an animal-friendly manner. Animal welfare begins with people.

[Main body]

[Methodology] As mentioned before, our methods were interviews, surveys and a lot research in the internet.

The texts about the animal welfare in Switzerland, the EU and USA will also follow.

The picture gallery follows afterwards.

[Survey results, Graphics, tables, etc.]

The survey results will follow.

[Experience, Reflection]

[Insights, experience, conclusion, tips for future teams, technical advice, etc.]

At the beginning of this project we didn't know that large image files are bad for the environment. We also learned a lot about animal rights. It was interesting to visit a local farm and also interview several people from a farm and animal welfare organisations.

We suggest that we pay attention to what we buy and buy meat wisely. Public awareness of improvements in livestock welfare should be pushed forward, like the motto "Do good and talk about it". It is to be hoped that the EU and the USA will take the Swiss animal protection as an example. If everyone did this, all living beings and nature would be a little better off. Quality comes before quantity. It's never too late to start.

Framework for the web contribution - Green Gaming

[Title] Video games and the environment - How are they related?

[Self-made header picture] For example a picture of a person playing a video game on a computer, with an image of the earth in the background.

[Short intro] Video games are a popular pastime for many people, but they can have an impact on the environment. In collaboration with students from India, we conducted an experiment to measure the actual energy consumption of video games on different devices with various graphics settings.

[Relation to the Project befter - before & after the experience] Our experiment helped us understand the environmental impact of video games and the importance of sustainable use of electronic devices.

[Main body]

[Methodology] We conducted an experiment to measure the energy consumption of different video games on devices with varying graphics settings.

[Media creations] We created a video that shows our experiment and its results. We also created an audio podcast that discusses the impact of video games on the environment.

[Interview] We conducted an interview with a student from India who discussed the challenges of playing video games on limited resources.

[Picture gallery with captions] We included a picture gallery with captions that show the equipment we used for our experiment and the results of our measurements.

[Survey results, Graphics, tables, etc.] We included graphics and tables that show the energy consumption of different video games on devices with various graphics settings.

[Experience, Reflection] Based on our experiment, we learned that video games with high graphics settings consume more energy than those with low graphics settings. We also learned that the sustainable use of electronic devices is an important factor in reducing energy consumption.

[Insights, experience, conclusion, tips for future teams, technical advice, etc.] We recommend that gamers use low graphics settings to reduce energy consumption and consider reusing old devices or their parts to minimize environmental impact. We also suggest conducting more experiments to better understand the environmental impact of video games.

[Wastewater treatment - an unknown privilege]

[Self-made header picture]

[Short Intro: …Wastewater treatment is a crucial process that many of us take for granted. We rely on it to keep our water sources clean and free from harmful pollutants. But how does it actually work? Understanding the basics of wastewater treatment can help us appreciate the privilege of having access to clean water and inspire us to take action to protect it…]
